The process of getting ideas

This video (thanks adhunt) shows an interesting take on how creatives come up with their ideas. It starts to make you think about how powerful subliminal persuasion can be. Since I’m not really in the industry, I have no idea if other creatives have experienced something like this. Does this usually happen? Or is this video just making me believe that?

I always figured that the subliminal thing works, though I’ve never seen such a blatant example of it. I think “creatives’ are just naturally more observant - or are deliberately just looking, all the time. I noticed several of the things they highlighted at the end of the video, the zoo, the shirts, the harp… but I didn’t get them all. Who knows, it might be a set up, but it’s still v. interesting.

I was also thinking that it may have been set up, but decided to show it on my blog anyway because I still found it fascinating.

And if what you said was true about creatives being more observant, then I think I picked the right career to pursue :)

I think creatives are more observant, almost by definition, just like a composer will have better pitch than most people, or a race driver have better reflexes. Or to put it the other way round, if you’re not observant then it might be difficult to do well in this business.

Anyway, good luck with what you’re doing…

I agree that keen observation is inherent in the nature of creatives. When you are in the idea business you need a deep mental library to draw from, so most are on a non-stop pursuit of ideas that move consumers to understand and react.

Something else at play in this is example is the Law of Recency - things they had just seen had the strongest influence. If they had been asked about the route taken we would find not everything was subliminal, I think they would have remembered the zoo’s gate.

    Nice find.

Derrick, what you wrote definitely brought back tidbits of what I learned in my intro to psychology class a few years ago about the Law of Recency and the Law of Primacy (things observed first had a stronger influence over everything that came after that).

    Thanks for visiting my blog.

Well first of all i must admit your blog is really interesting… i like the way you think and try :-) I can’t say that this is the way it works for everyone but it sure does for some. What came to my mind watching this clip, was my teacher in ad school. He used to get angry when he asked us “why did u do it like that?” and we were answering “because i just like it that way”… he always claimed that there is no such thing as i like it! He was telling us that we like it because it reminds us something we have seen before. When i tried harder i realized that somehow that was true. Things we usually like & do, are things we have got used to and adopted. Ideas that we have allowed to become our own personal style. That is something that is very hard to change, but not impossible. Anyway… have a nice day/week/month :-)

    Hi Zed,

Thank you so much for your comment. Your teacher makes a very good point, which I haven’t thought about before, so it was definitely something refreshing. I will definitely be keeping this in mind when I’m creating my spec ads.
